At Sundown in a Desert on a foreign Planet a Basilisk StoneBird is awakening killing his poor pray - a little Lizard with just one stern look from his petrifying Eyes
The colors I use to create this pic are wax-colors [link]
Encaustic is a special wax-art technique. I melt colored waxblocks and apply the molten and hot allmost liquid wax onto a special sealed paper card by using a small lithe iron. While ironing, the colors blend and create totally new shades and tones. With the sole, the tip or the rim of the hot iron Im able to create all kinds of different patterns and designs.
With enough experience one may even iron fine details such as plants, buildings, animals... onto the card. By scraping away hardened access wax later on, outlines can be created and highlights.
The only drawback but at the same time the best challenge and most fun in working with molten wax is, that everything is being created the very instant straight from the heart and soul.
No scetch, lineart... or any beforehand layout can be made.... and of course theres no way to undo any mistakes without destroying the whole picture or design entirely.
You could say, that with this technique the depest emotions and thoughts of the artist at that very moment are being banned onto paper. Allmost like a snapshot of the subconscious
